-- In an era of habitual political discord, local independent filmmaker Evan Chaffee and his producing partner Patrick Martucci are currently raising funds for their latest project Depth – a short film which implores the question, "how well do we really know the politicians we are electing into public office?"
The two describe the film as a psychological thriller that addresses themes of political manipulation, unemployment, mental health, and revenge against the backdrop of a sailboat in San Diego. Utilizing a cyclical narrative, Depth is full of tension and intrigue as Merrick, the film's protagonist, attempts to regain control of his life after he is fired and ultimately blacklisted by the megalomaniacal politician he helped elect into power.
When asked about the project's inception, Chaffee explained: "Depth is a passion project for Patrick and I that began while I was writing a book inspired by my work in local politics. While running political campaigns, I was shocked to see how blindly voters were buying into the manufactured personas that consultants had created for their candidates. In order to achieve political progress, I feel like we need to stop buying into the lies that career politicians have been feeding us, and I'm hoping this film will act as a wake-up call." Martucci, whom has cultivated both a professional relationship as well as a deep friendship with Chaffee since working together as crew members on the upcoming "Solstice Ranch", was drawn to Depth because of its exploration of "current issues that are plaguing the American psyche, such as corruption, greed, and mental health."
Over the past ten months, Chaffee and Martucci have been working tirelessly, securing locations for their film in San Diego and Laguna Beach, as well as hiring a full cast and crew of industry professionals. Combined, the crews' credits include feature films, television shows, and short film projects, such as "Tolkien's Road," "In Your Head," (premiering later this year at the Austin Spotlight Film Festival), and "Trickle." Meanwhile, the casts' credits include widely known projects such as Oliver Stone's "Nixon," "Father of the Bride II," "Friends," "Step by Step," and "Something Wilder."
