How This Indian Student Repaid His Student Loans in Three Years
Dreams are hyperbole. I prefer calling them "plans". Dreams are just fantasy unless you have a plan which makes you believe you can achieve.
In this interview, our student Devang Desai calls out about his plans, how he worked hard for them and how he achieved them.
1. Which university and program did you apply for?
I applied to Stevens Institute of Technology (USA) for my Masters in Telecommunication Management.
2. What did you think was the most challenging part about studying abroad? How did you face it?
Surviving and paying for day to day expenses like rent, food, travel and other expenses is the biggest challenge. Another challenge is living by yourself and doing all the household chores along with studies, doing a part-time job so you can pay all the expenses. It gets difficult, as it seems that going to the USA is a dream come true but to achieve that dream you have to work harder and sacrifice certain things to achieve your goals. Though being away from family makes you feel homesick but having friends and colleagues around and that dream of achieving something helps you to overcome the problem.
3. Did you finish making your repayments? What was your repayment period?
Yes, I have finished my loan payment. It took me around three years.
4. Our readers would like to get some advice from you on making repayments.
I started making repayments once I got a full-time job after I finished my graduation. I started keeping a small amount of savings, reduced my expenses and did budget control. I was able to make a large payment towards the loan repayment. If you pay large payment back to the loan amount initially, it will only help you to cover up your interest rate.
You can consider living near your University or workplace in order to cut down on your travel cost.
"While making any expense, ask yourself whether you really need this?"
5. Where are you currently working and as what? Is this what you have always wanted to do or be?
I am currently working with Sprint Corporation, USA as a Senior RF Engineer. I have always been fascinated by working in the Telecommunication industry and have always been working towards it. Both my Bachelor's and Master's were in the same field. Though I see now that IT and Computer Industry has been booming a lot since I was having trouble learning to program and was not that good with software skills I decided to continue toward the wireless part.
