Follow on Google News | I Grow Chicago to Host Grand Opening of Full-Size Basketball CourtAs the first project of their Peace Campus expansion, all ages of the community came together to create the basketball court
By: I Grow Chicago As I Grow Chicago continues to expand in Englewood, the community asked for a space that provided an alternative to violence and offered a safe place for physical activity and stress relief. The full-size basketball court was supported by Topfer Family Foundation, Strides for Peace and many individual donors. "All ages stepped up to create our Healing Justice basketball court," says Zelda Mayer, Director of Development for I Grow Chicago. "The young men on our block constructed the court alongside a local Englewood construction company. Our children helped clean and paint the court, and the elders will manage the court. Everyone, no matter what, has a role to play." I Grow Chicago is committed to taking Englewood from surviving to thriving, and every aspect of the expansion will include assistance from the community. "The healing justice court is the first project of our Peace Campus, an effort to transform an entire block into a healing zone filled with accessible, needed resources," continues Mayer. "We're converting vacant lots and homes into community spaces, from our court to a playground to a family resource house. Our neighbors are taking back their community, with the support of people from across Chicago who know they need to invest in peace." Media is welcome to attend the grand opening at the Peace House at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, located at 6402 S Honore St. The ribbon cutting will begin promptly at 1 p.m. with remarks from the I Grow Chicago Executive team and Kenneth Johnson, 7th District Commander.
