BRUSSELS - July 17, 2018 - PRLog -- In this coming of age story, a boy is confronted by demons in his dreams. Are they real, or only imagined?

Time will tell.

"Soul Witness, Doug Roberts' debut novel, is a mesmerizing tour de force. Roberts has crafted a tightly written, unique and compelling story of a boy whose nightmares uncover a dark, deadly secret. Brutally powerful, Soul Witness is filled with mystery, wonder, and, in the end, resolve." ~Earl LeClaire, writer and poet, was the recipient of the 2010 Aquillrelle Award for Poetry.

It Begins

Wind and wave assault the tiny single-masted sloop,
as it cuts through the night.
Lightning etches the sky,
illuminating the mainsail and jib
against a blackened, angry sea and sky.
I sit at the helm,
rigid and steely-eyed,
holding fast the sail,
harnessing the fury of the night,
in my headlong plunge into darkness.

I sat up in bed, my back to the window. What…was that? I had been
helpless to slow the boat, to quell the wind, or vanquish the lightning.
The enveloping darkness had intrigued and frightened me. I turned to
the window, as a driving rain peppered the glass, and the dream left me.
A series of lightning flashes illuminated the yard.
A movement caught my eye. On the road, framed between two
short but ancient trees, stood a solitary figure. I strained to see more, as
the scene fell into darkness once again. I stared vainly into the night as
the storm moved offshore, venting its remaining fury over the Atlantic.
A single, errant flash of lightning split the night. In that instant of
exploding light and sound, the face of a little boy stared blankly through
my window, only inches from my own — then gone.
