PRLog -- There are many persons that own metal detectors and provide tank locating services. Some these individuals may own a Ground Penetrating Radar Unit (GPR). However very few are trained Geotechnical experts that can interpret what they are seeing on the screen. Environmental Systems Geotechnical experts can identify buried metallic or nonmetallic objects down to 18 feet below surface grade level. Environmental Systems has over 20 years experience locating underground storage tanks. Recently during a routine tank sweep Environmental Systems found a buried freezer that was cut up and covered with Asbestos. Also "Abandoned in Place" heating oil tanks may be missed if the top section is cut off. Most metal detectors can only see 2 feet below the surface and the bottom of the tank is greater than 3 feet the reading may be missed. Looking for a oil tank is a process, sometimes GPR can not positively identify a subsurface object. Environmental Systems recommends that extra cost soil borings or excavation be used to positively identify the buried object. Also it is necessary to do the entire property just not the perimeter of the residential structure as oil tanks have been used to heat garages and pool heaters. In some cases the oil tank may buried 20-30 feet from the main residential structure.
