Congresswoman Annie Kuster Shares Personal Struggle with Alzheimer's at The Birches
Emphasizes Need For Greater Resources in Granite State and Nationwide
Originally from Concord, Kuster was personally impacted by Alzheimer's disease when her late mother, Susan McLane, was diagnosed. She shared with community family members and caregivers the toll the disease took on her own family both emotionally and financially.
"Annie knew about half of our residents and families and had a personal connection with them, which was nice," says Chuck Crush, executive director of The Birches at Concord.
Kuster encouraged attendees to push for continued National Institute of Health funding to move closer to prevention and a cure. She also shared how she has pushed for legislative solutions to support those struggling with the disease by boosting resources for home caregivers and improving Medicare beneficiaries' access to Alzheimer's screening and prevention services.
Led by a Certified Dementia Practitioner, The Birches at Concord cares exclusively for those with dementia and Alzheimer's disease using a proven Mind & Memory approach. This unique approach supports a resident's capabilities through individualized and group activities encouraging creativity and self-expression. Using research-based programming, seniors engage in physical, social, intellectual, emotional, purposeful and spiritual wellness.
