Hamden Fire Department Completes Dementia Training
Benchmark Senior Living at Hamden Helps Hamden Fire Department Go Inside the 'Dementia Brain'
The community recently deployed a unique Dementia Live program, providing better knowledge and insight into what it's really like to live with the disease. Dementia Live puts individuals in the position of experiencing what those with dementia, Alzheimer's and other memory disorders encounter. By incorporating demonstrations and tools, such as a virtual tour and practical action plans, individuals are able to go inside their brain for the first time, making it easier to care for and understand them.
As a result, the community experts are now even more committed to sharing their expertise with people outside their walls in order to help caregivers, family members and those with dementia get the support they need.
Recently, Benchmark Senior Living at Hamden partnered with the Hamden Fire Department to donate and conduct a multi-week training program designed to help Hamden firefighters better understand and care for those with the disease. A total of 92 firefighters have now learned why it is often hard to get compliance from dementia patients, why communication can be difficult and how to effectively connect with them.
"This was a great opportunity for the Hamden Fire Department to work with a facility in town and learn how to better help those with dementia," says Charles Lubowicki, Training Officer for the Hamden Fire Department. "We are constantly training to improve our skills to be able to provide the best care for our patients, communication is an essential part of patient care and this training has helped our ability to understand what dementia patients experience daily."
"Our focus is on elevating the power of human connection, so we were thrilled to be able to partner with the fire department for the betterment of the community," says Jacquelyn Gaulin, executive director of Benchmark Senior Living at Hamden. "If we can help just one person with this difficult disease, then we have accomplished our goal."
The specially trained team at Benchmark Senior Living at Hamden offers this program at various times to the public, including families, caregivers and professionals working with those who suffer from dementia. If you or your professional group are interested in participating in an upcoming program, feel free to contact Benchmark Senior Living at Hamden at (203) 248-1864 to schedule.
