NORWELL, Mass. - June 21, 2018 - PRLog -- Eric Edelman, PT and owner of Peak Physical Therapy & Sports Performance, a South Shore practice specializing in unique programs that provide comprehensive treatment in orthopedic, spine and sports medicine specialties, provided education on the long-term effects of carrying a heavy backpack during a recent presentation at Norwell High School.

"We've all seen those comical pictures of students carrying backpacks that look as though they outweigh them but there's nothing funny about the damage a too heavy backpack can do to a child's spine," said Edelman.

The presentation addressed the long-term effects of carrying overweight or unevenly distributed back packs, which include strained neck/shoulders; damage to the spine; strain on joints; and the potential to develop scoliosis.

Basic tips to alleviate backpack pressure were offered, such as keeping the weight of the backpack to not more than 15% of the students' bodyweight; having the heaviest books closest to the body and the lightest further away; and purchasing a backpack with additional support straps to help evenly distribute weight.
