Dovetail Project to Hold 18th Graduation Ceremony this Thursday
The Dovetail Project Graduation Ceremony at the DuSable Museum Will Celebrate 47 Young Fathers
By: The Dovetail Project
The Dovetail Project is a Chicago-based nonprofit organization giving young African American fathers ages 17 to 24 the skills and support they need to be better fathers for their children and better men in their communities. The program educates fathers about the roles, rights and responsibilities of fatherhood, and helps them maintain an active, engaged presence in their children's lives. Upon completing the program, fathers receive a stipend and connect to a job, GED or trade.
Carl West, keynote speaker, is the CEO of MB Media, Founder and Managing Editor of Truth Be Told News Service, as well as an on-air commentator for WVON 1690AM Chicago. Most importantly, like the graduates, he is a father. "As a father myself, I know how much of a difference it makes when I share my own experiences with the young men in our program," said Sheldon Smith, Founder and Executive Director. "As both a father and a businessman, Carl is the perfect person to inspire our graduating class."
The organization's exclusive 12‐week curriculum in parenting skills, life skills and felony street law was developed through research by Sheldon Smith, who was himself a young father when he founded the program. Mr. Smith has recently been recognized as an American Red Cross Community Impact Hero (2018), a Forbes 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneur (2018), and a CNN Hero (Top 10, 2016).
"We are so proud of this graduating class," Mr. Smith said. "Any man can father a child, but it takes commitment and hard work to really be a father. Our graduates are dedicated to the lifelong love and labor of fatherhood. And no one is more excited than their children when they cross the stage—you should see those babies clapping and smiling for their dads!"
Since the Dovetail Project was founded in 2009, over 300 young fathers have graduated (this graduating class will make 384). Within the past year, the organization's work has been highlighted by the Obama Foundation, CNN and Kenneth Cole Mankind Hero, U.S. News and World Report, and many others.
