In addition to educational sessions and demonstrations exclusively for registered conference attendees, the AAW Symposium offers events, which are free and open to the public, that offer a rare glimpse into the world of woodturning. Public events include exhibitions, galleries, and benefit auctions, as well as a trade show jam-packed with the newest woodturning products, tool and lathe manufacturers, and supplies. EXHIBITIONS The AAW Symposium will showcase a collection of exquisite woodturned works in wood in the exhibitions and galleries. Visitors and attendees will have the opportunity to browse stunning contemporary sculptural and functional turned works by established and emerging artists. The works range from cheerfully subversive to serious and most everything in between. Dia*Log, is AAW's annual member exhibition. The theme was chosen to honor Portland, a city that prides itself on a diversity of voices, and in recognition of Oregon's long history of logging. Perhaps more important, the theme speaks to the way in which we find common ground through woodturning. Two artist awards will be presented at a ceremony on Saturday evening - a Masters' Choice Award and a People's Choice Award. Instant Gallery - The AAW Symposium's Instant Gallery is the largest display of turned-wood objects under one roof and highlights more than 1,000 art works and crafts in wood by woodturners in attendance at the event. AUCTIONS The AAW Symposium's auctions offer enthusiasts an opportunity to add to their wood art collections (or start a collection). Both live fundraising auctions will be streamed simultaneously online at http://www.auction2018.woodturner.org. The AAW Live Benefit Auction on Friday, June 15, 5:30 p.m. (PST), supports a wide array of woodturning educational programming, grants, and initiatives, and features 44 pieces by established and emerging wood artists. Attendees and visitors are invited to purchase a handcrafted bowl of any size for $25 to support Meal on Wheels People. Additionally, visitors will have an opportunity to browse a display of woodturned boxes made and donated by AAW members for Beads of Courage, a nonprofit that supports local children coping with serious illnesses.
