Follow on Google News | Shadowing Program Helps Students Check the Pulse of Future Career OptionsBy: Apache Junction Unified School District Before she graduated Kelsie shadowed staff at the Banner Hospital Emergency Room. With the help of Michelle, an RN who works at the hospital, Kelsie was shown how to check pulses and had a glimpse about what a career in medicine might be like. Kelsie plans on pursuing a career in nursing and after a few years in the field she hopes to extend her training to become a surgeon. The Shadowing Program allows students to help plan their education and career choices by researching possible careers and spending a day observing a professional practitioner, artisan or worker in a field that is of interest to the student. Students in the 11th and 12th grade are eligible to apply online on the Events & Activities page of the AJHS website, https://www.ajusd.org/ "My experience at the hospital has truly been the greatest experience I have ever had," said Kelsie who spent the day talking to doctors, nurses and patients. "My greatest aspiration in life is to make life better for all those who need it. Thanks to everyone who gave me this shadowing experience. It helped me solidify my goal to become a nurse. Knowing the plan for your future is scary after you graduate. If there were more chances for students like this, to see how the field truly works, the real world wouldn't be so scary." Through AJHS's shadowing program students complete basic research in their areas of interest using the Arizona Career Information System, which is the Department of Education's platform for Education and Career Action, before participating in a 'shadow day'. After the student completes their basic research the College & Career Center identifies shadowing opportunities. The student is then responsible for scheduling the 'shadow day' and making arrangement for transportation to and from the shadowing location. Once the student confirms these details with the AJHS College & Career Center coordinator, the high school will grant the student an excused absence from classes during the time he or she is taking part in the shadowing activity. By spending a day with someone who works in the field the student hopes to pursue, the student can become familiar with many aspects of the position as possible such as daily tasks and work activities; working conditions; physical demands; required skills and abilities as well as knowledge and preparation; Information about the program will be emailed to 11th and 12th grade students in January of 2019. Parents who are interested in learning more about the program for their student can email Mr. Mattausch after July 24 at tmattaus@goaj.org or call 480-474-3980 ext. 5338. End
