Local Student Awarded National Merit Scholarship

He joins a distinguished group of about 7,500 high school seniors who will receive National Merit Scholarships worth over $31 million. The scholarship competition began with approximately 16,000 semi-finalists out of 1.6 million juniors who took the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. His mother was also a National Merit Scholar.
In April, Felletter was awarded the Genshaft Global Presidential Scholarship from the Honors College of the University of South Florida, a $10,000 scholarship to support study abroad. In May, the CEO of IBM, Ginni Rometty, recognized Felletter as a recipient of the prestigious Thomas J. Watson Memorial Scholarship.
He earned the highest possible ACT composite score of 36. He received a commendation from the Tampa City Council last year for achieving that perfect score.
John Felletter was also a 4-year letterman at Tampa Catholic (TC), having been a starter on the TC Lacrosse team since his freshman year and a captain his last two years. He was on TC men's swim team his junior and senior years. Felletter was active on the TC campus including serving on the Campus Ministries and Student Ambassador teams, mentoring incoming freshmen, leading the STEM club as President, and competing on the Science Bowl team in the regional competition at the University of Florida the last two years.
Felletter graduated with a 4.54 GPA. He was a member of National Honor Society, National Beta Club, National Science Honor Society, National English Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta (Math), Rho Kappa (Social Studies), and National Hispanic Honor Society. He served on the camp staff of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Engineering and Construction Camp at the Air Force Academy last summer.
Felletter was accepted to Case Western Reserve University, Emory, Georgia Tech, Colorado School of Mines, University of Florida, University of Miami, and the University of South Florida. He chose the Honors College at the University of South Florida where he plans to major in Cell and Molecular Biology with the goal of pursuing a career in medical research. He will be participating in the University of South Florida/Howard Hughes Medical Institute Stem Academy prior to beginning classes.
John Felletter is the grandson of Joe and Mert Clayton of Belle Glade and Judith Kearns Felletter and the late Vince Felletter of Tampa.
