According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration spokesperson Eric Bolton, a majority of car collisions can be attributed to distracted driving. Every day, approximately nine people die as the result of distracted driving, and countless others are injured or have close calls due to multi-tasking behind the wheel. Common distractions include eating and drinking, driving with pets or children in the vehicle, tuning the radio, carrying on conversations with passengers in the vehicle, and road rage. Among the most prevalent culprits of distracted driving is using a smartphone while operating a vehicle. Studies have demonstrated that 97.5 percent of people cannot safely drive while texting or taking a phone call. It takes an average of five seconds to read a text; whether a driver is traveling at high speeds on the interstate or they are driving through a residential neighborhood, a lot can happen in this small window of time. In response to the overwhelming number of people who have suffered from the consequences of distracted driving, Nevada passed a law in 2011 that banned the use of handheld cellphones to make a call or send a text while driving. However, in spite of the hefty fines that may be imposed for breaking this law, distracted driving remains a leading cause of collisions. To combat this problem and help drivers develop better habits behind the wheel, insurers and app developers are creating apps that turn smartphones into tools that promote safe driving. Today, several driving apps are available and offer a range of features that aid drivers in recognizing areas that can be improved upon. Some work by simply blocking incoming calls, texts, and app notifications while the vehicle is in motion. Others offer location sharing or send out a parent notification to let them know when their teen has arrived at a designated location. While drivers are facing more distractions than ever, driving apps can help them identify areas that need improvement while incentivizing safe and responsible habits.
