MILWAUKEE - June 1, 2018 - PRLog -- Milwaukee area dentist Dr. Tony shares how sugar in the mouth can affect teeth.

Greenfield, WI — June 1, 2018 — Wisconsin Dentist Tony Cigno recently published an article titled, "Sugar and Your Teeth: Win the Battle."

We all know that eating too much sugar can lead to tooth decay and cavities. However, what is less known is that it isn't the sugar itself that does the damage. It's what happens after eating sugar that can make a mess in your mouth.

As Dr. Cigno says, "It's not only important for you to be aware of the battle taking place inside the mouth due to sugar – what sugar does to the teeth – but also how to mitigate any damage before it becomes worse."

Sugar consumption is often related to cavity development. Dr. Cigno explains that while the mouth is full of bacteria, some of these bacteria is actually beneficial to dental health. However, harmful bacteria feed on – and multiply – from sugar eater. Over time, an acid is created from these bacteria and this acid destroys tooth enamel. This is what creates cavities.

However, the story is not all bad. Dr. Cigno goes on to share that this battle – and subsequent damage – is constantly being reversed. He elaborates, "When acids take away minerals that help repair the teeth, it's called demineralization. The positive is that there is also a process called remineralization. This process replaces those minerals and strengthens teeth."

In the remainder of the article, Dr. Cigno reveals ways to re-mineralize tooth enamel and ways to balance the effects of sugar intake, inside the mouth.
