Nonprofit in Traverse City Allows People with Alcoholism to Drink

A nonprofit organization in Traverse City, Michigan uses a model of care that does not require people with alcoholism to abstain from alcohol.

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - May 31, 2018 - PRLog -- A nonprofit organization in Traverse City, Michigan that welcomes men who have experienced homelessness and who are going through alcoholism treatment doesn't require them to stop drinking.

Dann's House has a team of professionals who have received training to utilize the harm reduction care model.

The model prioritizes preventing harm, acknowledging that sobriety may be best for people who have an addiction but also recognizing the value of other types of improvements.

Thus, the men have housing, professional support for their alcohol use disorder and permission to drink as much as they want.

The Dann's House team lets the residents consume as much alcohol as they desire, but make sure the men do not partake in illegal and/or violent activities.

The occupants of the house are expected to pay to live there. Their rent is calculated based on how much they earn and the men who have no income are required to apply to get federal assistance.

The rest is expected to contribute with at least 30 percent of their total income.

According to the house's representatives, every resident has a job, volunteers and has been able to reduce their alcohol intake by half or more.

The house only welcomes men but there are plans for a similar establishment to open and serve the local women who need help, the representatives of the nonprofit said.
