BILLINGS, Mont. - May 30, 2018 - PRLog -- A substance abuse treatment program in Billings, Montana is having problems with difficulties with overcrowding. Motivated Addiction Alternative Program (MAAP) — allows people with multiple drug-related infractions the option between jail and drug treatment.

However, the program has struggled in recent times because the jails have become overpopulated with people who were arrested on drug charges and the Yellowstone County Detention Facility currently occupies only five beds.

A meeting attended by 50 people, was held to allow people to voice their concerns. Many addressed issues regarding safety because of a large number of transients coping with substance use disorders in the area.

Police officers have stated that they have been seeing more transients dealing with substance use disorders who enter the city. They also revealed that the program has lost its effect.

A new drug abuse treatment program could happen soon as a new treatment center is being constructed. The substance abuse treatment center will serve women and have 148 beds with laundry facilities and a kitchen. The project is estimated to cost $18.8 million and Montana residents approved it two years ago.
