United Premier Soccer League Announces Gremio FC San Diego as Western Conference Expansion Club
San Diego (Calif.)-Based Pro Development Club Enters Into UPSL for 2018 Fall Season
Based in San Diego (Calif.), Gremio FC San Diego will begin UPSL play in the Western Conference, and host its home games at Mira Mesa High School (10510 Reagan Road, San Diego, CA 92126) in compliance with UPSL's Minimum Standards.
United Premier Soccer League Commissioner Yan Skwara said, "The San Diego market has proven that it loves soccer, and we're pleased to welcome Gremio FC SD to the UPSL. Owner Andre Kunz Sana has been around the international soccer scene being a native from Brazil, and has a plan of action for his Gremio FC SD. We look forward to working with Mr. Sana and wish him and Gremio FC SD every success going forward."
Gremio FC San Diego is named after one of the two top professional clubs in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and Gremio FC SD Owner Andre Kunz Sana has deep connections to his hometown team.
Gremio FC San Diego Owner Andre Kunz Sana said, "We're going to build this club from the start with a solid team that can compete on the field. The reason we're doing this is because there are a lot of clubs in the United States doing it wrong, and I want to build this right based on the South American, the Brazilian model. You create the team, start training and build something, and if you win the fourth division you go up to the third division. If you win the second division you move up to the second. That's what the UPSL is doing right and we want to be a part of a system that is correct."
Sana, 37, is a native of Porto Alegre, Brazil, and has spent his lifetime in and around the game. A former youth academy standout, Sana played for regional second division club in Brazil before studying abroad in Spain and immigrating to the United States. He most recently played with Temecula FC in 2017.
The team soon will announce tryout dates and upcoming game schedule.
