Follow on Google News | New local crowdfunding for charity program launches thanks to a grass-roots leadership effort100 people sharing $100 each with a local charity each quarter gets off the ground with resounding success. 100PalmBeach comes alive!
By: 100PalmBeach.org In space provided gratis by Palm Beach Atlantic University, the 100 people who comprise 100PalmBeach gather to hear presentations by representatives of three local charities, then vote on which of the three should receive that evening's funding. Participants agree to contribute their $100, even if they are not able to be in attendance at the presentations. More than a dozen charities have registered for the opportunity to be one of the three presenters. The selection process at the quarterly gathering is public and transparent. The group is still in the process of building to the goal of 100 participants. As of the first meeting in March, the group founders were more than halfway to that goal. The second meeting of the group will be Monday, May 7. People interested in joining the grass-roots effort are invited to register online at 100PalmBeach.org. The list of people who have stepped up to participate are from a variety of demographic backgrounds. Attorneys, accountants, presidents of area businesses, two West Palm Beach city commissioners, stay-at-home moms, retirees, the executive director of Leadership Palm Beach County, and more, are joining the grass-roots effort. The recipient of the group's funds at the first gathering of 100PalmBeach was the Pediatric Oncology Support Team (POST). POST helps local children and their families fight cancer by giving them hope, help, and healing with compassion. 100PalmBeach is modeled after similar philanthropic efforts of groups whose work is described on 100whocarealliance.org (http://www.100whocarealliance.org). Local charities and people who wish to participate are encouraged to register at 100palmbeach.org (http://www.100palmbeach.org). The group's introductory flyer includes a quote from the Dalai Lama that founders felt illustrated the group's mission: "Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into the water, the actions of individuals can have far-reaching effects."
