Unstoppable Growing Red Tide Portends Red Wave In Upcoming November Election?
While a possible record-breaking red tide has no foreseeable end, impacts now seen on both Florida coasts, protesters and media react in utter and defiant ignorance.

An eerie blue glow at night along the coastal waters of San Diego is due to a so-called red tide. This event is caused by the excessive algae bloom of at least two phytoplankton organisms, according to the Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System (SCCOOS). These two dinoflagellate species, Ceratium falcatiforme and Lingulodinium polyedra (formerly Gonyaulax), are known to produce toxins that are dangerous to humans and wildlife.

Recent SCCOOS observations also show notable levels of several red tide organisms as far north as Santa Barbara. While the current California coastal red tide is not believed to be causing any health effects as of this date, SCCOOS cautions boaters, swimmers, and seafood consumers to watch for red tide advisories.

Red tide has also been severely impacting south Florida beaches this spring. According to news agencies in the region, red ride has been reported in the Gulf of Mexico for several weeks and continues unabated. This unusually early season red tide event has been associated with extensive fish kills, as well as threats to other wildlife, including sea turtles.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, this bloom of the Florida red tide organism, Karenia brevis, has caused fish kills along several Collier and Lee county beaches. Affected areas include Lovers Key, Bonita Beach, and Fort Myers Beach. Recent FWC samples also found notable red tide concentrations in coastal waters as far north as Gulf County, Fl. Human health effects have also been reported.

Capt. Zach Zacharias, correspondent for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, states that this out-of-season red tide is puzzling and of great concern. The 1950s and 1960s saw several disastrous red tides "which had our beautiful beaches piled high with windrows of dead, rotting fish up to three feet high and a stench not to be believed," Zacharias recalled.

These East-West Coast red tides coincide with the publication of a new book, When The Tide Turns: Almost Everything You Need To Know About Red Tides and Other Harmful Algal Blooms, by science writer Eric Deadwyler. This book explains what these phenomenon are and answers these questions:
What are red tides?
Are they dangerous to people or wildlife?
Is it safe to eat seafood caught in sea water where a red tide is occurring?
What can be done about red tides?
And more.

Deadwyler was formerly Director of Education and Science at Florida's Gulfarium. He has given scientific and technical lectures in marine science and related fields, as well as philosophy of education, to all age groups, including university-level in-service teacher staff development. He has owned and/or maintained several dozen aquariums, from tiny fish bowls to 10,000+ gallons, and kept over 300 species of aquatic and marine flora and fauna.
