Russ Mawby Signature Service Project Comes to Mid-Michigan
Over 100 Mid-Michigan AmeriCorps members will come together for a day of spring cleaning at Fenner Nature Center. An environmental education center, Fenner features 130 acres of mixed habitat with approximately four miles of trails.
Former commissioner and chair of Michigan Community Service Commission, Russ Mawby believed in collective action for the common good, that people could make a difference. In his interview for Our State of Generosity, he shared "Everyone in America can be a philanthropist, you may not have a big bank balance or the possibility of giving large sums of funds, but all of us can all give something. But more importantly, we can give of our heart and of our self in a variety of ways. We can give time, talent, or service in the community to enrich the lives of people." Mid-Michigan AmeriCorps members will be making a difference by giving their time, talent and service at Fenner Nature Center by eradicating invasive species such as pulling garlic mustard, trail maintenance, repairing damaged infrastructure, maintaining native plant gardens, and cleaning litter.
An environmental education center and oasis in the city, Fenner Nature Center encompasses 134 acres of publicly accessible green space that includes over four miles of trails, rolling glacial eskers, towering maple groves. Serving as a .classroom for area schools and other local educational institutions, Mid-Michigan AmeriCorps members will be doing their part to help enrich the lives of those who visit Fenner Nature Center.
AmeriCorps is a national service program designed to strengthen citizenship and the ethic of service by engaging thousands of Americans on a full-time or part-time basis to help communities to address their toughest challenges. The Corporation for National and Community Service administers AmeriCorps at the federal level and works in partnership with states to develop service programs and create a community-based national service network.
