LAS VEGAS - May 7, 2018 - PRLog -- Speaker, trainer, consultant, Christina Aldan has been selected to moderate a discussion panel at the inaugural Nevada Computer Science Summit in Las Vegas, Nevada. A grant from the ECEP Alliance (Expanding Computing Education Pathways) makes the the Nevada Computer Science Summit possible. The event will take place June 18th at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Select teams from the state's K12 school districts, public charter schools, and higher education institutions have been invited to participate. School district representatives or charter representatives are the only ones who can register their team, so those interested should contact their district representative to get on a team. Christina will moderate the panel discussion titled, "Diversity and Equity: How do I get more underrepresented students to take computer science?" Panelists are: Dr. Heather Crawford-Ferre, Nevada Department of Education, covering gender topics; Dr. Kyoiko Stanton discussing race/ethnicity issues; Tiffany Young, WCSD Equity and Diversity Department; and Dr. Andreas Stefik, Associate Professor at UNLV, discussing students with disabilities learning computer science.

"Christina is an international speaker and Nevada resident with two young children in our education system. She is a lovely gal and I know she will guide this session and topic beautifully," said Cindi Chang of the Department of Education. Cindi is responsible for overseeing the development of the state's computer standards and instructional support.

Keynote speakers for the event include Dr. Steve Canavero, State Superintendent for the Nevada Department of Education, and Pat Yongpradit, Chief Academic Officer for Code.org. The summit will bring the stakeholders and practitioners together so they can better understand how the new computer science standards will effect our schools. Legislative requirements and funding opportunities outlined by SB 200 will be among the many breakout sessions. Other sessions include: pre-service teacher programs, teacher pipeline strategies, computer science pathways, and more. School district participants must register with their team at: https://www.stemhub.nv.gov/csfornv. Registration ends Friday, May 11th, 2018. The invited teams will also be using time for strategic planning. This means that stakeholders can strategize bringing the computer science education standards to their own faculty and student body.

STEM education prepares students for STEM careers, and these careers are necessary for economic vitality in our state, our country, and the world. Governor Sandoval has made the commitment to invest in K-12 STEM education and STEM workforce training so that all Nevadans have the skills the New Nevada economy requires. It is our hope that this site will help turn his vision into reality.
