According to UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram, the track's quality and speed are among the reasons the NCAA Division I university chose Mondo's Super X 720 track for its new facility. "We don't just want a new track; we want to have an Olympic-quality facility with the fastest track in the state of Alabama so athletes can set records, whether at the collegiate, high school or junior high level." Ingram noted that this will be the first time in the track and field program's 33 years that it will have a world-class track for practice and competition. The new venue will be the home for UAB's women's track and field team, and it will enable UAB to host intercollegiate meets, as well as conference and high school events. The university also plans to make it available for use by UAB students, staff and faculty and Birmingham residents.
