RENO, Nev. - April 27, 2018 - PRLog -- A drug detoxification center in Reno recently opened and is the first new medical facility to be located in Washoe County in more than three decades.

Reno Behavioral Healthcare Hospital is designed to deliver a calm location in a tranquil setting.

The drug detoxification center will be the newest facility for those who require treatment after being jailed. There are 28 Nevada court ordered alcohol and drug rehab centers — nine are in Reno.

There are numerous drug treatment centers in Nevada but there is a serious shortage of mental health centers. The state is currently last in the U.S. in mental health services and access to mental health care, according to Mental Health America.

Join Together Northern Nevada (JTNN) is one of the groups sharing awareness to the issue of drug abuse and the harm it can cause. The group was started in 1995 after an organization of concerned residents came to the realization that there was a growing issue in Washoe County.

The group began as a collaboration of community members who shared a common goal; establishing a drug free community.

Gov. Brian Sandoval stated that important cuts to mental health services were a possibility. It was only halted by Nevada state representatives but they also chose to cut the funding for outpatient centers.

In 2016, there were 110 drug-related deaths in Washoe County, down from 133 deaths in 2015, according to the Washoe County Annual Report. (https://www.washoecounty.us/coroner/files/annual_reports/...) That report also indicated that methamphetamines were involved in most drug-related deaths in Washoe County, with 46 casualties, while prescription opioids caused 43 casualties.

When patients arrive at the hospital, they are assessed. This will determine the type and length of drug or mental health treatment that the patient will need.
