Mayor Declares Addiction Treatment Must Expand

During his State of the City Address, the Burlington mayor said that he is working to expand addiction treatment for prison inmates and community members.

BURLINGTON, Vt. - April 20, 2018 - PRLog -- Mayor Miro Weinberger made a call to action to fight the opioid crisis. He is trying to pass Bill S.166, which would increase access to treatment for those in the county justice and parole systems.

Weinberger hopes to cut down the wait time for patients to receive buprenorphine and methadone, which can sometimes take up to 17 days in the Chittenden County.

The Vermont Department of Health released data last month stating that more than 100 deaths from opioid-related overdoses were reported throughout the state.

Similar to Weinberger's efforts, the Vermont Department of Corrections is also trying to increase medication-assisted treatment (MAT), which would provide behavioral and emotional therapy for patients in the county justice or parole systems.

In addition to MAT, state law enforcement and government officials are distributing naloxone kits and opening safe injection sites and needle exchanges. In 2016, county EMS administered naloxone to nearly 550 residents.

Weinberger said Burlington is partnering with the University of Vermont Medical Center and the Howard Center to increase treatment access.
