Stephen Gaynor School's Art Works for Puerto Rico

Student art gallery to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico

MANHATTAN, N.Y. - April 19, 2018 - PRLog -- As news of an island-wide power outage spreads, Stephen Gaynor School, a New York City-based independent Pre-K, Lower, and Middle School for bright students with learning differences, announced "Gaynor Cares: Art Works for Puerto Rico," today to benefit those who continue to be affected by Hurricane Maria. The event is the latest in Gaynor's ongoing commitment to hurricane relief.

"It is important to remember that places that have been affected by hurricanes will be in need of relief for months, and sometimes even years after the story starts to fade from headlines," said Dr. Scott Gaynor, head of Stephen Gaynor School.  "It has been eight months since Hurricane Maria made landfall, but Puerto Rico is still very much in need of help."

For "Art Works for Puerto Rico," each grade from Pre-K through Middle School created collaborative works of art centered on different themes including the meaning of home, kindness, bridging communities, and more. Each project varied based on curriculum and age group, ranging from mosaics and paintings to research-based displays about accomplished people of Puerto Rico.

All of the art will be displayed in a gallery for viewing during an event on April 26 and 27. Each work of art was photographed and commemorated in a set of post cards.  The postcards will be sold in packs of 10 for $10 with all proceeds benefitting the Boys and Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico.

"I am proud of our teachers, faculty, and students for not only working together to support Puerto Rico, but doing so in a way that is both educational and collaborative," said co-director of the Lower School, Michelle Fox.

Since the start of the 2017-2018 academic year, Gaynor has been committed to aiding with hurricane relief. In September 2017, Gaynor organized a school supplies drive to benefit students affected by Hurricane Harvey in Texas. 1,900 school supplies were collected and donated to Briarmeadow Charter School in Houston.
