Sacred Heart School's participation in M3 Challenge results in semi-final placement
The M3 Challenge is an Internet-based contest for high school juniors and seniors; through participation students experience what it's like to work as a team to tackle a real-world problem under time and resource constraints, similar to those issues faced by professional mathematicians.
Sacred Heart students participating in the 2018 M3 Challenge were Olivia Columbo, Feiyou Guo, Abby Morse, Elena Murphy and Sam Presutti. The team was asked to model a function to predict if the world's hungry could be fed from the total amount of wasted food.
The Sacred Heart team learned it had advanced to the second round of judging in early March, making it one of 185 out of 917 teams nationwide to move on in the challenge. In late March, team members and Mathematics instructor/team advisor Jon Olson learned they had not progressed to the final field of six.
"Despite not advancing to the finals, the Sacred Heart team did an outstanding job and learned a great deal about the challenges professional mathematicians face when providing solutions to real life problems," said Olson. "The entire Sacred Heart community can be proud of the work our team accomplished and the lessons they took from it."
