Adelphi Celebrates Poetry Day with 227 High School Students

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - April 13, 2018 - PRLog -- Adelphi University will prompt 227 students from high schools across Long Island to show their creative side with Poetry Day (http://events.adelphi.edu/au_event/poetry-day-2018/), celebrating the written word with workshops, a keynote speaker, an open-mic poetry slam and an awards ceremony.

On Wednesday, April 25, students will gather at the Ruth. S Harley University Center at 8:15 a.m. After welcoming remarks, students will enjoy workshops taught by Adelphi faculty members Marc Prinz, Caitlin Scena, Matt Massaia, Danielle Barnhart and Jordan Rindenow.

After learning about the rhymes, metaphors and similes that make up poetry, students will get to share their work during an open-mic poetry slam during lunch.

The keynote speaker will be Patricia Spears Jones, an African American poet, playwright and winner of the 2017 Jackson Poetry Prize from Poets and Writers. She best known for her book A Lucent Fire: New and Selected Poems, a finalist for the PSA's William Carlos Williams Prize and the Patterson Poetry Prize and featured a Pushcart Prize winning poem.
