GALLATIN, Tenn. - April 4, 2018 - PRLog -- Wilma Lee Cooper born 1921; as Willma Leigh Leary in Valley Head, West Virginia, a tiny Appalachian Mountain town with a population of less than 270 people. Early on at the tender age of five years old, Wilma Lee Cooper, as she become known professionally, loved to perform, sing and honed her music talent into a career that spanned over 75 years; until her death on September 13, 2011 at her home in Sweetwater, Tennessee.

"My style is just the old mountain style of singing," Ms. Cooper said, explaining the difference in a 1982 interview in Bluegrass Unlimited magazine. "I am traditional country. I'm a country singer with the mountain whang to it."

Though staunchly traditional, Ms. Cooper's approach to performing nevertheless proved flexible enough to incorporate material from contemporary songwriters. She and her husband, Stoney Cooper had their highest-charting country hit — it reached No. 3 — with a version of "There's a Big Wheel," a song written by Don Gibson, who is best known for composing and recording the swooning country ballads "Sweet Dreams" and "I Can't Stop Loving You." Another of the couple's Top 10 hits came with a rollicking adaptation of the blues singer Lead Belly's "Midnight Special," released under the title "Big Midnight Special" in 1959.

Wilma grew-up during hard times in America. During the early 1900s and survived the 1930s depression era which shaped her practical thinking, grassroots nature. Ms. Cooper hand knitted nearly every outfit she every wore on stage. She wasted nothing, staying busy with her many projects that included cooking, handcrafted clothing and endless hours of music both on-stage and practicing at home.
