Early sterling silver Japonesque vase. Made by Tiffany & Co. in New York. Four straight and upward tapering sides and splayed block corner supports.
Engraved bamboo, cranes, blossoming prunus branch, and kimono-clad figure holding fan and fish. Tooled ornamental bands at top and bottom. Butler finish. A wonderful period piece that embodies modish exoticism. Union Square hallmark (1870-1875) includes pattern no. 2978. Fine patina and definition.
