The instruments that are used typically in Hindustani music such as the sitar, sarod, esraj, surbahar, veena ,bansuri, sarangi, bansuri, violin, pakhavaj, santoor, and tabla. The instruments that are used typically in Carnatic music are veena ,gottuvadyam, venu, mridangam, harmonium, ghatam, kanjira, violin, and nadaswaram.

History of musical instrument: An instrument is considered to be a musical instrument when it is used to adapted or created to make musical sounds The history of musical instrument started from the very beginning of human culture. Long ago musical instruments are mainly used for a ritual like a trumpet or a drum in a religious ceremony. With changing applications in step by step the musical instruments evolved. Indian musical instruments independently developed in many regions of the world. By the material composition, their size, their effective range the instruments can be classified.

Percussion instruments

Dholak: Dholak is known as a very popular folk drum. It is actually a barrel-shaped cylindrical drum have skins on both sides.
Dumroo: The traditional and oldest form of a percussion instrument is known as Dumroo. It is the form of hour-glass drums.
Ghatam: Ghatam replicates the meaning of the pot it is an ancient percussion instrument such as mridangam, veena and etc.
Ghungroos: Ghungroos are the most popular Indian musical instrument. Usually it is the small brass bells. This musical accessory generally used by the classical dance performers.
Kanjeera: Kanjeera is a very popular old and traditional instrument. It is the secondary percussion played with the mridangam.
Tabla: It is the most commonly popular pair of drums. It consists of small hand drum which is known as Dayan and the larger metal one known as bayan.
Khol: Usually Khol is traditionally used to accompany Kirtans and Bhajans. Relatively it is small high skin with a diameter of about 9-10 cm. It gives a particularly piercing and high sound.

Wind instruments
Bansuri: Basically it is a folk instrument.
Harmonium: Usually it belongs to the free-reed aerophones family. This instrument is of small tabletop size with bellows at the back. This bellow is pumped be one hand and the other hand used to play the keyboard.
Shehnai: It is the most popular double-reed predominant wind instrument.

String instruments
Sarangi: Sarangi generally has a hollow body and it is made of teak wood which is adorned with ivory inlays. It is consist of forty strings among which thirty seven are sympathetic.
Sitar: It is most popular Indian musical instruments. It can be considered in the category of chordophone of the lute family. From a large seasoned gourd, sitar has a neck that is crafted from toon or teak-wood.
Veena: It is the traditional instrument basically plucked stringed instrument.
Tanpura: It is the most fundamental of all the instruments.
