MARION, Mass. - March 20, 2018 - PRLog -- The best bands are usually comprised of people from unique backgrounds, yet from similar artistic paths. The heart of soul music has always been the struggle between jazz, blues and gospel music as the dominant influences; with the vocalist of soul traditionally coming out of the church and the blues and jazz clubs as a staple foundation for cultivating musicians. In addition, In addition, many of the jazz and blues player had tenure as church musicians as well as jazz training. From the studio session players of the legendary Brill Building in New York City to those of Motown and Stax Records, to the backing bands for James Brown and Parliament Funkadelic, Kool and the Gang, and Earth, Wind & Fire are all examples of the jazz base for soul and funk.

Likewise we find an interesting basis for the current line-up of The GroovaLottos. Founding members, Eddie Ray Johnson and Mwalim DaPhunkee Professor, as well as bassist, Richard Johnson, and Percussionist & MC, The ZYG are all trained in jazz and traditional concert forms of music. In addition, John, Johnson and Mwalim also have backgrounds as Pentecostal church musicians and agree that their jazz training serves the rather spontaneous and fluid nature of playing for the Pentecostal church.

"THAT is what soul-funk-blues is all about. That is the tradition," declared Eddie Ray Johnson after a fire filled gig at Gilda's Stone Rooster.
