Youth Fitness Program Makes Activity Fun

Fitness Coach Aims to Get Kids Off Screens And Into Fitness Scene

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. - March 13, 2018 - PRLog -- Kids spend as much as 6 hours in front of a screen at age 10, and by age 14 that number is as high as 9 hours. Children need at least 60 minutes of activity per day, yet for those who don't opt for competitive sports, there are few options available.

Local fitness and health coach Ryan Patrick, owner of Peak Fitness & Sports Training (Peak F.A.S.T.) sees it all. There's a great divide between athletes with overstuffed schedules—practices, tournaments, and training sessions—and those who don't get enough activity. Athlete burnout is a known phenomenon, but few are addressing the underactive youth with little more than finger pointing at the screens. Physical activity is vital for young bodies and minds. And it doesn't have to feel punitive for kids either.

Patrick sought to create a youth fitness program that weaves movement skills into games involving flexibility, agility, strength, coordination, and peer-to-peer interaction. Patrick designed this program with children looking to stay or get active in mind; however, even athletes will benefit. It builds movement "literacy" for kids of any ability without the burden of competing at higher and higher levels.

Patrick explains, "I see it in my household too. We have a teenager who enjoys sports but isn't highly competitive.  The options are dwindling as he ages, and my wife and I find ourselves constantly looking for ways to keep him active and engaged.  We know he's at his best when he's active.  It leads to better sleep, better behavior in school, less illness, and more friend interaction."

Inactivity has been linked with a plethora of health concerns, including obesity and cardiovascular disease. PeakFAST uses group metabolic training to create a social atmosphere and accelerate fat burning for adults but is now building enjoyable training programs for kids.

"Our program is launching with two groups, ages 7-9 and 10-13. We have three goals for the program: 1) It builds basic movement skills for their age group 2) It's fun for the kids and 3) It helps them feel accomplished. I'm excited about it."
