FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - March 7, 2018 - PRLog -- Voyager Maritime Alliance Group (VMAG), one of South Florida's leading marine electronics organizations, helped repair, replace, re-cycle and upgrade its existing electronics equipment, in order to get Sailing Yacht Ultima Life back to its former glory, after sustaining minor cosmetic damage in St. Thomas, during Hurricane Irma.

S/Y Ultima Life was one of the lucky vessels that did not experience total destruction during Hurricane Irma.  As it was still seaworthy, with fiber glass on the back and some railings broken, the owner decided to transport her back to her homeport in Fort Lauderdale and it was here that VMAG was selected, out of several other local electronics companies, to complete this project.

The project comprised of revamping and upgrading the navigation system.  David Leone, commented, "To keep cost to a minimum, we used our technical expertise to utilize any equipment that we felt was recyclable.  This included three transducers, a weather meter located on top of the mast, radar, AIS and a VHF antenna.  The expertise of VMAG enabled the new Raymarine multi-functional navigation system to integrate with the older analog system using an interface adapter, to allow the existing system to work flawlessly and seamlessly with the new system."

As this vessel is a catamaran, it had three transducers, one in each part of the hull, and then a third that had a speed and temperature sensor.    VMAG was able to use its technical expertise to re-use the original transducers by engineering suitable adapters and interface boxers to integrate with the new system.  By doing this, VMAG avoided the boat from having to be hauled out of the water, which saved the owner a substantial amount of money.

VMAG also used the existing radar system.   "The radar was not working with the old equipment, so it looked like the radar was dead.   In order to avoid purchasing a new radar equipment, VMAG carefully reviewed the entire equipment, added another adapter to interface with the new equipment, and was able to get a signal, to bring the radar back to life".

VMAG used a similar technique to recycle the weather instruments on the top of the mast, including the VHS Antenna.  They even used the existing cable that ran into the cabin.  By adding another interface from the equipment, VMAG was able to upgrade the old analog single into a digital signal (NMEA2000), in order to share the data with the new equipment.

The installation, from start to finish, took about a week.  Once all the new equipment was installed and the existing equipment was repaired, it was time to calibrate the AutoPilot.   There was a short delay, as the engine would not start.   This was due to some electrical issues with the engine, but once that was rectified, the system was working.

This latest project from VMAG demonstrates, not only its deep understanding of all elements of marine electronics, but the ability to save money, by integrating the old instruments with the new, to ultimately upgrade to a fully digital navigation system.  The easy option would have been to just recommend new equipment across the board, but VMAG pushed the existing equipment to allow its full life-cycle, and save the client money.
