Alten Construction set to build new public safety center

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - March 1, 2018 - PRLog -- A full-service San Francisco Bay Area commercial construction company, Alten Construction (http://www.altenconstruction.com/), has been awarded the contract to build the new $35 million San Rafael Public Safety Center and began construction this month.


Slated for completion in 2020, the 44,000-square-foot building will house police, fire and administrative facilities.

"Facilities like these are unique," said Bob Alten, president and co-founder of Alten Construction, of the combined facilities. "It's a project you do not see very often, and we were excited to be selected to help build this for the area. We started our business in San Rafael, and we live in San Rafael. We feel like we're doing something for the community."

The new center, located on Fifth Avenue between C and D streets, will be home to a San Rafael police station and fire station 51, serving the downtown area as well as San Rafael police and fire administrative offices.

The earthquake-proof safety center will also function as a public shelter in case of emergency. The project includes a subterranean garage and public plaza.

The contract was approved by the city council 5-0 in December 2017 and awarded to Alten Construction in January. A groundbreaking ceremony was also held in January to commemorate the occasion.

The construction company has already begun work on two other San Rafael Fire Department stations – No. 52 and No. 57 – as well as San Francisco station No. 5. In 1999, Alten Construction completed the $2 million Southern Marin County public safety center, which houses emergency operations and the county sheriff's office.
