Follow on Google News | Sisters Host Renowned Liturgical Musicians for Live Concert April 21David Haas and Marty Haugen will perform familiar favorites in St. Joseph Chapel
The performance will be hosted by the School Sisters of St. Francis in St. Joseph Chapel, on their near south side campus, 1501 S. Layton Blvd. (Greenfield Avenue at 27th Street). The 10:00 a.m. concert time was selected to allow liturgical ministers, choir members, and clergy, most of whom are working at their parishes on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings, to be able to attend. Both Haas and Haugen have composed hymns, songs and Mass settings that have been among the most widely performed and beloved liturgical music used in Catholic parishes since the 1980s. Many of their compositions are equally popular among congregations of other Christian denominations. Collectively, these composers can claim hundreds of compositions, and dozens of recordings and publishing projects. David Haas' songs, including Blest Are They, You Are Mine, We Have Been Told, and Now We Remain, are popular favorites in congregational singing, and his Psalms for the Church Year remains a standard decades after it was first published.Millions of Christians also have the songs of Marty Haugen ingrained in their hearts, including Gather Us In, Canticle of the Sun ("The heavens are telling the glory of God"), Eye Has Not Seen, and We Remember, from his widely embraced Mass of Remembrance. In addition to composing, both men are widely sought-after workshop clinicians who bring warmth, humor, and a peaceful spirit to each gathering. In their music ministry, the outreach has been interdenominational and intergenerational. Mr. Haas has been an international advocate for the role of young people in the life of the Church. Both he and Mr. Haugen have written liturgical settings for numerous Christian denominations, and both have composed in Spanish, or have had their compositions translated. "Our sisters and friends of the community are thrilled to be seeing David and Marty in concert in our landmark chapel," said Donna O'Loughlin, Coordinator of Outreach Events. "It is safe to say that for the past 30 years, not a week has gone by that at least one parish in Milwaukee hasn't worshiped with their music. The popular staying power of their compositions is a tribute to the way they both have touched the hearts and spirits of millions of people of all ages. "While St. Joseph Chapel is impressively large, we are keenly aware that demand for concert tickets may exceed its seating capacity," O'Loughlin noted. "We have already received several large group orders, so we encourage anyone considering attending to reserve their tickets immediately." Tickets are $20 and may be ordered by mail.
