KOLKATA, India - Feb. 21, 2018 - PRLog -- According to a research conducted by the Times of India ( 2012)  it was revealed that many in Kolkata suffered from abject poverty. Even though Kolkata is popularly known as the City of Joy it is apparent that not every resident of Kolkata can partake in this joy .The provisional estimates of below poverty line surveys in the city calculated the per capita income of the poor in Kolkata at a meager Rs 27 INR per day! West Bengal also featured in the fifth in the poverty charts and it was revealed that a whopping twenty two percent of West Bengal urban population belonged in the BPL or Below Poverty Line category. The number of homeless people staying in the streets of Kolkata shot to 70,000 in 2011 from 55.000 in 2001. This is a just a brief glimpse into the grim reality of the urban poor in Kolkata.

There are several reasons contributing to the extreme poverty in Kolkata. The intense political unrest of the 1970s led to the collapse of the major industries like jute  which led to a massive loss of livelihoods. In the 70s the city also opened its arms to about ten million refugees from Bangladesh after the great Bangladeshi Liberation War. This led to a massive population explosion in the city leading to rampant unemployment . Finally Kolkata is the major urban metropolitan city of West Bengal - and it has always been the job seeking destination for many poor, but ambitious youth and other individuals from surrounding regions like Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and Uttar Pradesh . Most of them come here with stars in their eyes and aspirations of making it big, only to get caught in the vicious cycle of poverty and unemployment , that compels them to stay in miserable circumstances just to eke out a livelihood.
