Nicaragua emerges as an attractive destination for companies in the medical devices indust
The country's skilled workforce, combined with attractive fiscal incentives for exports, make Nicaragua an emerging platform given its proximity to the largest importer of these products: the United States.
Currently, there is a small cluster of companies in the country that manufactures medical devices under the free trade zone system. Products include needles, catheters, cannulas and general surgical devices, which are mainly exported to the United States.
David Slick, President of Command Medical, one of the companies in the cluster, stressed the important role played by the Nicaraguan workforce in the success of this type of company, underlining its high productivity. Slick also pointed out that low turnover and absenteeism are key factors for the proper functioning of this industry. He also acknowledged education as a pivotal factor when choosing a new investment destination:
In addition to a productive and qualified workforce, the country offers modern infrastructure such as industrial parks that support the development of the industry. Project developers and contractors are knowledgeable of the new trends and technologies for construction and assembly of plants to meet standards of regulatory institutions worldwide.
The growth of the medical devices industry in Nicaragua is evident from the expansion of the manufacturing companies and their growing contribution to the country's exports.
