ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. - Feb. 7, 2018 - PRLog -- With January comes a clean slate. After the holidays, many of us level with the change of calendar. What does the New Year hold?  For some of us, stepping away from the exuberance and excess of December can help to see the work that lies ahead. If you're struggling under the burden of anxiety or depression, this New Year may be the ideal time to reach out for the help you need.

Recognizing depression
Are you struggling with anxiety or depression? Depression can make you feel overwhelmed with feelings of sadness, loneliness, and anger. Symptoms can include:
  • Feeling sad, empty or hopeless most of the day nearly every day
  • Lack of motivation
  • Feelings of guilt over an inability to fulfill expectations
  • Lack of energy, overwhelming fatigue, but difficulty in falling or staying asleep
  • Increased irritability and temper outbursts
  • Difficulty focusing or concentrating

When and if symptoms persist for longer than two weeks, it's time to consider taking action and getting help.

Recognizing anxiety
Generalized anxiety can affect your ability to function and leave you feeling trapped in negative thought patterns. Symptoms can include:
  • Frequent worry or a constant feeling of concern
  • Difficulty controlling or tempering your worry
  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Increased irritability, restlessness, and muscle tension

Again, when and if symptoms persist for longer than two weeks, it's time to consider reaching out to find help and relief.

Who suffers?
Anyone can suffer from anxiety and depression, from children through teenagers and adults. Those with a family history of either disorder, those who have experienced a recent trauma or loss, and those struggling under burdens of caregiving are especially at risk.

First steps to overcome Anxiety and Depression
There are ways to overcome anxiety and depression to find greater purpose, joy, and fulfillment in life. In addition to considering therapy, you might also incorporate some of these suggestions into your quest for a new you in the new year:
  • Regular exercise releases endorphins, which are natural feel-good hormones. You'll feel better about your body and clear your mind.
  •
  • Make time for you, especially if you're a caregiver.
  •
  • Make time to unwind at the end of the day. Sleep is so important to health—consciously unplug from electronics at least 30 minutes before bed, and develop a bedtime routine that helps you relax.

Seeking professional help
Both individual and group therapy help sufferers understand the root causes and triggers for anxiety and depression. You can resolve to move into the New Year towards a healthier, more positive, more productive you.
