Puerto Rico Mayors to Receive Antonio Villaraigosa Leadership Award at Latino Leaders Network's Tribute to Mayors
Mayor Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles to Receive Chairman's Award
WASHINGTON - Jan. 22, 2018 - PRLog -- The Latino Leaders Network (LLN), a philanthropy that honors individuals who make a positive impact for Latinos in the U.S., will honor The Mayors of Puerto Rico with the Antonio Villaraigosa Leadership Award at the Tribute to Mayors dinner hosted on Thursday, January 25th, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Mayflower Hotel (1127 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C.). Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz of San Juan and Mayor María "Mayita" Meléndez of Ponce will accept the award for their outstanding leadership responding to Hurricane Maria and Irma. In addition, Mayor Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles will receive the Chairman's Award for his leadership of the Latino Alliance of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
"Last year, Puerto Rico was devastated by one of the worst natural disasters to hit any area of the U.S. within memory," said Mickey Ibarra, Founder and Chairman of the Latino Leaders Network. "Four months later, some 40 percent of the people are still without electricity. There are many reasons for the slow recovery and the continued suffering, but the islands' mayors have been an unflinching voice for our fellow citizens there and have ensured that their municipalities have not been forgotten. We stand with Puerto Rico and urge the federal government to continue providing the resources needed to help the island rebuild."
Confirmed speakers also include former USCM president, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake of Baltimore and Voto Latino President and CEO Maria Teresa Kumar.
Over 350 guests are registered to attend, including mayors and other elected officials, as well as leadership from top national Latino organizations, such as the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, UnidosUS, MALDEF, Voto Latino, Victory Institute, and NALEO. Top sponsors include Bank of America, Southwest Airlines, Walmart and GEICO.
Chairman Mickey Ibarra will distribute his new book "Latino Leaders Speak: Personal Stories of Struggle and Triumph," a collection of personal stories delivered at the Latino Leaders Luncheon Series by national Latino professionals from a variety of occupations, from politics and sports to education and activism.
