Follow on Google News | Colleagues at the Millennium Airport Hotel Dubai go the extra mile to beat diabetesAs part of an ongoing commitment to the local community in Dubai and the wider UAE, the Millennium Airport Hotel Dubai
The first walk was organized in 2009 in the UAE. In 2010, the initiative was extended to Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and India. The following year, the initiative was taken to Saudi Arabia. Over the last eight years, the event has garnered immense support with the participation from several government authorities, medical entities, corporates, schools and the local communities. According to General Manager, Simon Moore, although often classed as a minor disease, more than nine per cent of the population in the Middle East and North Africa region are diagnosed with the condition: "Even more worrying, a further 14 million people are estimated to be living with diabetes but are undiagnosed," "At the hotel, we are encouraging healthy living and welcome the publicity generated by Beat Diabetes Walk which has supported blood glucose testing in the workplace as well as producing healthy cookbooks to foster good practice in the kitchen." The Beat Diabetes initiative pioneered by the Landmark Group now operates across Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and India, as well as the UAE, aiming to create awareness about the prevention and management of diabetes. "We can all benefit from the three key messages of the movement," added Mr Moore. "Eat Healthy, Get Active and Take the Test (for blood glucose levels) are practical suggestions, and we are proud to adopt this on behalf of both guests and staff at the Millennium Airport Hotel Dubai."
