Many professionals have the use of a second language. Going beyond the call to answer the queries of the clients, welcoming them into the organization in a different language, that can leave a lasting impact to the client. Let's take for example CTS College. Every semester there is an information session which provides the potential students with details of the programmes that they would be interested in. Guidance is provided to the students that enables them to find a route to their ultimate goals. The school offers the introductory levels into both Spanish and French. However, two staff members know American Sign Language, another is fluent in both Spanish and Portuguese. This came to a surprise to a student who was deaf, that was accustomed to walking around with a notepad to use to communicate. Being able to communicate with the staff in order to obtain information to the course was such a welcoming gesture that he had granted a wonderful review on social media. Similar, students got motivated to learning the languages offered by the school when they saw that a native Spanish speaker would be lecturing. The value of the course was increased by having someone that understood the complexities of both languages who is able to differentiate to the class what would be communicated by a local when compared against someone foreign. The lecturer of both courses highlights the cultural aspect of the respective communities. This enables the students to gain an appreciation of the countries from which the languages originated. Further, students are able to grasp the differences between what they do in a business in Trinidad verses the other countries. This enables students to prepare themselves to bargain against their current or potential business partners or competitors.
There are numerous reasons for one to learn another language. From having a basic knowledge to expertise in either, it would be essential to going beyond the call to providing service to the foreign clients of a business. Further, it welcomes the opportunity to network, to connect and to move past the historical barriers in communication. Each culture is rich and can offer new insights and solutions to our everyday problems, so why not access it through a method that can be fun and informative at the same time?
