Is weight loss just about calories? educogym Canary Wharf debate this long-time discussion

Everyone is looking for the answer to weight loss, but through all the FAD diets, does weight loss simply come down to a calorie deficit? Educogym Canary Wharf's personal trainers discuss this ongoing debate.

CANARY WHARF, U.K. - Jan. 12, 2018 - PRLog -- New diet trends are coming and going every other week, from low fat to high fat to paleo (caveman diet), 5:2, calorie counting, juicing and many more, but what really is the most effective way to burn fat and lose weight, or is it a simple burn more than you put in? Personal trainer Godfrey Nurse explains educogym Canary Wharf's theory "at educogym Canary Wharf, our main aim is to burn fat, and just as importantly to build muscle, muscle is the foundation to burning fat, burning calories and essentially the boss of your metabolism, we have multiple nutrition plans available, including a high fat version of the ketogenic diet, to low fat high protein, as well as vegetarian and vegan options, the thing with fat loss, is it isn't a one size fits all, and what helps one person lose weight may not help another".

Dieting as a term is also becoming detrimental to the person on the 'diet', by putting yourself 'on' a diet you are then just waiting to turn it 'off'. "All of our plans are called nutrition for a reason, you are putting nutrients into your body for the long term, way of eating is also another term, it is a positive way to look at food for the long term rather than the short term 'diet'." explained Orlstyne Wilson one of educogym Canary Wharfs top personal trainers.

But the main question, is calories. Are they the be all and end all of losing weight "Of course, overall it does make a difference, in terms of fat loss, if you are in a calorie deficit, so consuming less then you are using, you will start to lose fat. However, there is more to it than that. As my colleague mentioned, muscle is the foundation of burning fat, so you can consume 800 calories less a day and lose weight on the scale, but you will most likely be losing muscle too, meaning you are slowing your metabolism long term and the ability for your body to burn fat. Maintaining and building muscle is vital, and to do this you need protein. You could in theory eat 2 donuts a day and 'lose weight' as long as you are using more energy and calories than those donuts provide you, however firstly this is not a healthy nutritious balanced diet and so will do your health no favours, but also providing your body with such a small amount of calories and nutrients means you will eat into your muscle mass. By doing this, you are using up what burns calories, and so when you go back to eating normally, your metabolism will be so slow that you will gain all the weight back" discussed Godfrey Nurse, Senior personal trainer at Educogym Canary Wharf.

So overall, calories do count, they do impact your fat loss, but what food makes up that number is the most important thing, eating 1500 calries of junk food VS 1500 calories of a balanced diet full of protein is the difference between the two, and eating option two means losing fat permanently, and not just as part of a FAD diet!
