BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Jan. 3, 2018 - PRLog -- Dr. Michael Thurman, owner of Thurman Orthodontics in Bakersfield, recently announced a new kindness initiative with the hope of spreading smiles both inside and outside of his orthodontic practice.

The kindness initiative, called Smiles Made Challenge (#smilesmadechallenge) uses the practice's motto, "smiles made" to deliver a powerful message to the Bakersfield community.

"Smiles made is a tagline we came up with many years ago and it does reflect what we do as a practice, straightening teeth, but to us, it's so much more than that. We strive to create smiles in more ways than that by focusing on giving back through our philanthropic efforts," explains Dr. Thurman.

The Smiles Made Challenge is the newest way Dr. Thurman plans to give back. Each month, the practice will announce a different Smiles Made Challenge for the community.  To complete the challenge, simply post a photo performing the good deed using the hashtag #smilesmadechallenge on social media.  Just for posting, participants will receive a prize.

Dr. Thurman has teamed up with a local non-profit called the Bakersfield Burrito Project to deliver the first Smiles Made Challenge: feed the hungry.

The Bakersfield Burrito Project was established over nine years ago as an underground system to support the homeless. Today, the organization feeds over 1000 homeless citizens in Bakersfield each month, with the help of an all-volunteer staff and support from local businesses.

Dr. Thurman is challenging the community to help this organization by becoming a volunteer or simply donating to the organization or other local food banks. To volunteer, simply show up any Sunday unannounced at 11am at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Bakersfield. Snap a photo of you completing this challenge to win a prize.

Dr. Thurman is taking his support of the Bakersfield Burrito Project to the next level by donating to the organization for every patient that gets braces or Invisalign at Thurman Orthodontics. When someone starts orthodontic treatment at the practice, they will essentially be feeding six homeless people.

"How awesome is it to know that by doing something to better yourself by improving your smile, you are also making a huge impact on six people's lives.  It's a powerful feeling," says Dr. Thurman.
