PASADENA, Calif. - Jan. 1, 2018 - PRLog -- On January 1st, as the world focused its attention on Pasadena, California, home of the more than a century old Rose Parade and Rose Bowl, Dr. Regina Benjamin and Dr. Clayton Lawrence attended this renowned festival of flowers, music, and sports, unlike any other in the world.

The Rose Parade initially began as an event established by the elite Valley Hunt Club of Pasadena. During the winter of 1890, members of the club were determined to find ways to promote the "Mediterranean of the West," and invited East Coast friends and clubs to participate in a mid-winter holiday. The holiday allowed attendees to enjoy watching competitions and games, such as chariot races, foot races, jousting, polo, and tug-of-war, all while enjoying the warm California sun. This time of year was also a beautiful display of California's fresh flowers, which led to the Valley Hunt Club eventually including a parade to precede the competitions.  Parade entrants would decorate carriages with thousands of flowers, and thus the Tournament of Roses began.

As Dr. Lawrence and Dr. Benjamin prepared to attend the event, each continued in their unwavering efforts to promote the spirit of healthy, vibrant, and compassionate communities. Dr. Regina Benjamin, the 18th U.S. Surgeon General of the United States, has changed the face of history in American medicine, both literally and figuratively, as she has served tirelessly to bring awareness to some of the most formidable diseases facing Americans today. From the founding, establishing, and rebuilding of her own health clinic – the Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic - before and after Hurricane Katrina, to becoming the first African-American woman to be president of the State of Alabama's Medical Society, to being appointed President Barack Obama's U.S. Surgeon General, she has remained dedicated to maintaining access to healthcare for all citizens and leading initiatives to encourage healthier lifestyles for minority and underserved communities.

Although Dr. Benjamin has stepped down as Surgeon General, she still garners national attention for uplifting communities, so it is no surprise that she and Dr. Lawrence would be involved in activity of the New Year, focused on community building and love. Dr. Lawrence, a recognized healthcare executive and fitness expert, is equally excited to spend New Year's Day in this manner and is additionally grateful to the sportsmanship and inspiration of the occasion.

Both Dr. Benjamin and Dr. Lawrence wish all a very Happy New Year, filled with love and prosperity.
