(West Palm Beach, FL – December 13, 2017) Friends of the Mounts Botanical Garden will be hosting 13 fun and informative horticultural events during January and February, including the ongoing major new ecology-themed exhibition, WASHED ASHORE: Art to Save the Sea, which will be on display at Mounts through early June.

The Art of Macro Photography:

Butterflies & Creating a Butterfly Garden

Sunday, January 7 – 9 to 11 am

Clayton Hutcheson Exhibit Hall A

$25 for members; $35 for nonmembers

Instructor: Alan Chin, Nature Photographer

This two-part special presentation is designed to serve the most ardent butterfly connoisseurs. Participants will learn tips and tricks to photograph some of nature's winged wonders with Alan Chin Lee, who led the Butterfly Rainforest exhibit project for the Florida Museum of Natural History. His passion for capturing nature will inspire you to look at butterflies with a critical aesthetic eye. Lee will address the art of macro photography providing concepts and methods to help attendees turn pictures into memorable photographs, then accompany the class with photography time in the garden. SLR cameras preferred. In the second half on the presentation, Lee will discuss how to create an easy and fun butterfly garden. Learn interesting facts about these beautiful "flowers of the air". Find out what plants local butterflies need at all stages of their life cycle including host plants and nectar plants.

Featured Book: Stir My Broken Brain & the Meals that Brought Me Home by Jessica Fechtor

Few pleasures in life surpass that of reading a good book or cultivating your own garden. Mounts Botanical Garden is partnering with the Palm Beach County Library System to combine these joys by uniting book lovers and garden enthusiasts with dynamic reading selections, followed by a discussion the grounds of the Garden. A national best-seller and winner of a Living Now Book Award, Stir is an exquisite memoir about how food connects people and lives.

Celebrate the 13th year of Stories in the Garden by bringing young ones (ages 2-6) to these FREE nature-themed programs co-sponsored by the Palm Beach Library System. They'll love the interactive stories, songs and learning activities in the Garden. Programs are held rain or shine in the sheltered Pavilion. No reservations required, except for parties of six or more. A craft activity to culminate each day will be reserved for the first 30 registrants.

Community Event/Art Encounter:

Weaving a Garden Tapestry

Wednesday, January 17 – 10 am to 1 pm

Throughout the Garden

FREE with paid admission

Instructors: Cindy Bartosek, Fiber Artist & Basket Guild of Florida, and Chelsea Odum, Education & Program Coordinator, Resource Depot

Join us for this special art event featuring local community partners the Junior League of the Palm Beaches, Resource Depot and Cindy Bartosek, and sponsored by TD Bank. Participants will collaboratively weave a loom using both natural and recycled materials as well as found and created objects. They will learn basic weaving techniques, identify opportunities to use materials that are usually thrown away to create art. This art encounter celebrates the beauty of the Garden by creating a large-scale tapestry using various elements to make a unique art installation that complements our Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea exhibit.

(Note: Appropriate for all ages. No weaving experience required. Ideal for families and groups.)
