SCPA Friday Night Workshop on January 5th, 2017

The January workshop is entitled "Professional and Personal Experiences of Microaggressions in a Therapy Room".
 
HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. - Dec. 19, 2017 - PRLog -- This presentation will address how to identify and address cultural and other biases that impinge upon a therapeutic setting. It will address the covert nature of the biases and subtle forms of aggression that persons from minority groups experience. There will be an experiential aspect to this training that will assist participants to identify and address personal biases that can affect the therapeutic process. There will be discussion of various experiences of prejudgment. The presentation will explore how to engage in a corrective process.

At the conclusion of the presentation, attendees will be able to:
• Identify and critically evaluate their own personal biases;
• Articulate their understanding of the detrimental impact of prejudgment;
• Describe how biases can undermine the therapeutic experience for members of a minority group;
• Propose ways of improving their self-monitoring skills in this regard and engaging in corrective action as necessary.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Dr. Raj
is a clinical psychologist with a private practice in Syosset, NY. She completed her doctorate at Long Island University - C.W. Post campus where she focused on developmental disabilities and CBT work with children. Throughout the course of her internship, post-doctoral training and private practice, she has sought to address the gap in mental health services for under-privileged and minority populations.

Location: Adelphi University's Hauppauge Education and Conference Center 55 Kennedy Drive, Hauppauge (Facilities are handicapped accessible).
