Tips to Relieve Stress Naturally

We are putting up with heavy job loads and unreasonable demands. We are swallowing outrage and frustration with unfair situations and irrational superiors because we cannot afford to be fired. What is stress really? Stress is the response of the nervous system to external impulses that are too large for it to handle. It is the internal result of external overloads. It's the response of our nervous system to protect us from repeated exposure to the same overloads by limiting our functioning or perception. Continued stress can lead to physical problems - the most commonly known are ulcers, headaches, high blood pressure, even heart disease.

According to Oprah Winfrey, scientists from Chiba University have found that compared with city strolls, leisurely walks in nature result in a 12.4 percent decrease in the stress hormone cortisol, a 7 percent decrease in sympathetic nerve activity, a 1.4 percent decrease in blood pressure and a 5.8 percent decrease in heart rate. Those studies have also shown that spending time outside, even as little as 5 minutes, can increase parasympathetic nerve activity by 55 percent , which, the researchers said, is associated with a relaxed state.

The old fashioned cup of tea is "mother's little helper" when it comes to stress relief. Chamomile, valerian, L-theanin (or green tea), hops, passion flower and lemon balm are nature's excellent remedies for stress. Try it out and find the combination of herbs that works best for you.

Similarly, a scented bath can do wonders for your stress. Just soak in the aromatic water and let yourself drift away. You will feel a lot calmer.
