Tinkercad and MyStemKits Sail into Education at the 2017 California STEAM Symposium
Educators were able to see first-hand the MyStemKits and Tinkercad prototype that adds 3D design lessons to select 3D-printable kits and standards-driven lessons in the MyStemKits library
Amongst the many innovative technologies showcased, the Autodesk booth highlighted the way of the future. The booth featured a 5ft tall Golden Gate Bridge with an assortment of 3D-printed boats in the makeshift bay below, which could be raced using sails, weights, or water currents.
These boats are part of an exciting pilot program being taken on by Autodesk's popular and easy-to-use, browser-based 3D design and modeling tool, Tinkercad, and educational curriculum and 3D-printed manipulative developer, MyStemKits.com. Check out the video: https://youtu.be/
MyStemKits develops K-12 curriculum for standards-driven instruction and 3D-printable manipulatives to create an end-to-end STEM solution. Integrating Tinkercad into their lesson plans allows students, then, to become designers and engineers as they tackle real-world, problem-based scenarios and test their solutions by 3D-printing their designs.
The two models and lessons involved in this pilot program are the MyStemKits' Wind Farm Kit and corresponding middle school lesson plan as well as their Boats Kit with its corresponding high school lesson plan "Carrying Cargo." In both of these lesson plans, students are given four designs to test and then are challenged to design a better solution to solve a given scenario. Working for theoretical clients, they have to tackle changing circumstances and do a cost-benefit analysis of the different options.
