SAN FRANCISCO - Dec. 19, 2017 - PRLog -- Held at the Moscone West Center in San Francisco, the 2017 California STEAM Symposium brought "nearly 3,000 educators from across California to catalyze improved STEAM instruction for all students. The California STEAM Symposium provides educators with opportunities for ongoing rigorous, high-quality, collaborative, and inspiring professional learning and resources. The conference also showcases innovative approaches to teaching and learning happening throughout the state."

Amongst the many innovative technologies showcased, the Autodesk booth highlighted the way of the future. The booth featured a 5ft tall Golden Gate Bridge with an assortment of 3D-printed boats in the makeshift bay below, which could be raced using sails, weights, or water currents.

These boats are part of an exciting pilot program being taken on by Autodesk's popular and easy-to-use, browser-based 3D design and modeling tool, Tinkercad, and educational curriculum and 3D-printed manipulative developer, MyStemKits.com. Check out the video: https://youtu.be/4qeFv60H_xY

MyStemKits develops K-12 curriculum for standards-driven instruction and 3D-printable manipulatives to create an end-to-end STEM solution. Integrating Tinkercad into their lesson plans allows students, then, to become designers and engineers as they tackle real-world, problem-based scenarios and test their solutions by 3D-printing their designs.

The two models and lessons involved in this pilot program are the MyStemKits' Wind Farm Kit and corresponding middle school lesson plan as well as their Boats Kit with its corresponding high school lesson plan "Carrying Cargo." In both of these lesson plans, students are given four designs to test and then are challenged to design a better solution to solve a given scenario. Working for theoretical clients, they have to tackle changing circumstances and do a cost-benefit analysis of the different options. Both of these lesson plans are freely available on Tinkercad and Instructables and set the stage for the best in future education. "We want young people to get excited about STEM and we believe that hands-on learning is the best way to accomplish engagement and retention. By incorporating Tinkercad, we can quickly integrate an experience-driven 3D design and modeling component into our existing library of over 200 kits and lessons," says Laron Walker, MyStemKits CEO.

It's a beneficial solution for Tinkercad as well, as their design software is already used in schools around the world. Now with the MyStemKits lesson plans, students are designing as part of a vetted curriculum and the 3D printers and Tinkercad software is directly impacting the way math and science teachers can reach their students.
