United Premier Soccer League Announces Starphire FC as New Northwest Conference Expansion Team
Founded in 2000, Medford (Ore.)-Based Pro Development Team Joins UPSL for 2018
Based in Medford (Ore.), Southern Oregon Starphire FC will begin UPSL play in the Northwest Conference and will play its UPSL home games at both 9,250-seat Spiegelberg Stadium (815 S. Oakdale Ave., Medford, Ore. 97501) and 6,000-seat Walter A. Smith Stadium (201 S. Mountain Ave., Ashland, Ore. 97250) in compliance with the UPSL's Minimum Standards.
United Premier Soccer League Commissioner Yan Skwara said, "The UPSL has received quite a bit of interest from teams in the Pacific Northwest, and we're pleased to welcome Southern Oregon Starphire FC as a new member for the Spring 2018 season. It's a terrific moment for the league to enter into a new state, and connecting the game in Oregon has long been part of UPSL's goal. We've been fans of co-owner Garin Coster for many years as he sees the vision in the UPSL's Pro/Rel Model. We wish Garin and co-owner Juan Ibarra luck as they prepare Southern Oregon Starphire FC for the Spring 2018 Season."
Southern Oregon Starphire FC is co-owned by Garin Coster and Juan Ibarra, both formerly of Southern Oregon Fuego (NPSL) turned business partners.
Coster, 49, previously operated Southern Oregon Fuego FC and is small business owner. A native of Ashland (Ore.), Coster will serve as the club's Managing Director.
Southern Oregon Starphire FC Managing Director Garin Coster said, "I appreciate the business sense and professionalism of the UPSL. I really like the Pro/Rel Model and the way the UPSL is put together compared to the NPSL or the PDL in that the UPSL is club focused rather than league focused. Bringing in sponsors for the teams is really smart, and is more like the way the European leagues are doing it."
Ibarra, 29, was a former Southern Oregon Fuego FC player, and will serve as the club's Director of Soccer Operations. A native of Mexico, Ibarra is an Office Representative for State Farm.
"There's a lot of interest in the Pacific Northwest for this level of soccer," Coster said. "And with the UPSL's price-point and national footprint there are going to be a lot more clubs that are willing to get started putting together a full men's team."
The club will soon announce tryout dates and its upcoming game schedule.
