PLANO, Texas - Dec. 4, 2017 - PRLog -- Members of the North Suburban Dallas chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated (NSDJJ) partnered with Minnie's Food Pantry to kick off the holiday season with a community service event. They brightened the smiles of kids from approximately 100 families served by the pantry. The event was held at Minnie's Food Pantry (3033 W. Parker Road, Suite 116) in Plano on Saturday, December 2.

Families pre-registered for the event where the kids enjoyed sweet treats, pictures with Santa and a toy giveaway.

Jack and Jill of America, Inc., a national organization of African American mothers founded in 1938, has 72 members in the North Suburban Dallas chapter, which includes Plano, Allen, Richardson, Carrollton and other local communities.

More than 40 mother members, teens and youth from the chapter volunteered to support the event and, earlier in the week, shopped for toys for kids ages 2 to 10. NSDJJ youth and teens, acting as Santa's helpers, engaged the children with story time and holiday crafts.  This is the first year the chapter has hosted a holiday event at Minnie's Food Pantry.

Both the chapter's annual fundraiser (to be held on December 9) and the event at Minnie's Food Pantry feature an African-American Santa, a meaningful opportunity for multicultural families to celebrate their children and our diverse community.

"When you come to do one thing, like photos with Santa, you never know what else you are really doing for that child and their family," said Cheryl Jackson, founder of Minnie's Food Pantry. "We so appreciate the mothers from Jack and Jill for bringing the holidays to our families."

The event is part of the chapter's ongoing relationship with Minnie's Food Pantry, which includes regular volunteer service by mothers and teen members; fundraising; donations to Camille's Kids Program bags (healthy and fun snacks provided to children who visit the pantry); and supporting literacy efforts through book donations to the pantry's "Read to Feed" program.

"One of the foundations of Jack and Jill is serving all children in our communities," said Seleste Sully, president of NSDJJ. "We were blessed to meet the families from Minnie's Food Pantry and kick off our holidays with their kids."
